Harry Potter Shows: a type of children's magic show

Veteran Philadelphia magician Stephen Yowe describes how he performs them.

Harry Potter Shows

SY: And I do Harry Potter shows.

EMZ: Talk about that. What are they and how do they work?

SY: Well, I dress the child to look like Harry Potter. He gets to wear a cape, a pair of glasses. He gets a magic wand to keep which I give out at all my children's magic shows. And I put a hat on his head, you know, one of those pointed hats...

Except for July and August, I wear a costume, I wear the hat. I am the wizard and he’s Harry Potter.

EMZ: OK.

SY: We put the hat on his head,

“And ladies and gentleman, today you’ll be treated to the the best magic you have ever seen. Harry Potter, and myself, no more "James" as his name.”

“It’s Harry Potter and the Harry Potter show for the next hour. So you will call him Harry Potter. And he is going to do all the magic. "Harry Potter" is going to assist me in all the magic.”

And while we’re talking, his hat is pointing up in the air, and suddenly it falls down to the right side.

I look over and say, “what did you just do?” and it’ll flip to the left side. Then it’ll go to the right side, then it’ll go to the left side, then to the left side.

The kids are laughing because the hat is bouncing back and forth on his head.

I’ll step back and say, “you see this, he’s already starting without me.”

“I’m the head magician here, I’m the wizard, and look at Harry Potter trying to steal the show.”

And the hat is jumping around on his head. One to the right, one to the left. Then it stops again...

And I say, “Are you done? Can we do the magic now?” And all the kids are laughing and "Harry Potter" is looking to see what’s happening because he can feel it, but he can’t see it. But his mother is taking the movies and he’ll see it afterwards.

Then I produce the rabbit and the dove, and I’ll ask "Harry" how old he is now. And he’ll answer, “I’m six.”

I say, “You’re sick, oh we can’t do the show!”

“No! I’m six.”

“You’re sick?”

And the kids are laughing.

And the kids yell out, “No, he’s six years old!”

That’s all the interactive stuff....
