My experience is that fortune telling works well as entertainment in almost any kind of event. Like caricatures, it can function as a centerpiece in an intimate setting or an accent in a larger event.

With metaphysical and new age thought enjoying increasing popularity, fortune telling is offered at more and more types of events.

Many are corporate events such as company picnics, hospitality functions, and holiday parties. But I have even seen readers staff exhibitors' booths at trade shows.

And, of course, fortune tellers are a great party entertainment idea for private and family events as well.

Fortune telling is not just for adults. I've done readings at children's sleep over birthday parties.

The key is that the host and guests are generally open to the idea. At most events, those who are interested will approach the readers. Those who are not, will stay away. If the host or a sizeable segment of the guests have strong feelings against the concept, it's best to use another type of entertainment.

As a generalization, I find women tend to be more interested in visiting the fortune teller at the party, but many men enjoy the activity as well.

Ladies' teas, bachlorette parties, or friends' get-togethers or "hen's" parties and other gatherings of women are often events in which readers are a welcome addition.

Responsible readers are aware of the power of words. They focus on imparting information in ways t empower the individual. This is especially so in a party environment where the purpose is to have fun.

Choosing a reader or readers

The same commensense applies with hiring a "fortune teller" or reader as with any other type of entertainment. Doing a little checking is never a bad idea.

What you want to see, preferably, is someone who has a background doing party entertainment. Also good is someone who is a practicing professional or long-time student in the area. Some have both party and professional experience.

Talking to the reader will tell you a lot. Is the person knowledgeable about their subject? Do you feel comfortable talking to him or her? Your reader should be eager to listen to you and answer your questions.

Word of mouth is an excellent way to locate fortune tellers or readers. Word of mouth can be a referral from friends or associates who have thrown parties and people in the special events industry.

Agencies that specialize in using fortune tellers can be another good source. If you do use an agency, ask how they screen their people.(You'd want to do this when hiring people from any kind of agency). And getting the word of mouth scoop applies to agencies as well as individuals, because like individual readers, agencies can vary in quality.

Set up

Set up is very simple. Most readers require a small table and two chairs. Period.If your astrologer is bringing a laptop, she or he will need access to an electrical outlet.

In a party setting, guests may choose to have their partners or friends sit in the reading.

Since you want to encourage guests to come over, it is not necessary to place the reader in "Siberia." In fact, their table should be in a place easily seen by your guests - let them be in the party. As a bonus, the sight of the waiting guests cues the reader to keep things moving.

Just don't place them near loud music. Remember your reader(s) have to talk and be heard above the background.

The reader may come dressed in a "gypsy" costume or will be dressed professionally in an appropriate way to fit into the festivities. A costume lends color to the event. But guests may be more comfortable talking to someone who is more conventionally dressed.
