A Star Wars Party for your kids - How Cool!

Now that the new Star Wars movie is out, it's time for a Star Wars party!Let your kids celebrate their inner-geek and play.

This article assumes that the local planetarium is unavailable (now that would be a cool location!), and that you're hosting your Star Wars party at home.

Use the ideas below as a springboard for your imagination. They are intended as suggestions only.

Most supplies can be made at home or purchased nearby inexpensively.

Below are links to reputable online suppliers if you'd rather your keyboard 'do the walking'.

If you don't have the time or inclination to do it all yourself, there are wonderful resources online which will provide you with complete party packages.

Two site that have a great assortment of Star Wars themed cups, plates, napkins, invitations, balloons, and table covers are Shidigz and Birthday-in-a-Box. They each offer all-in-one sets of themed party supplies - a much better deal than buying items separately. Shindigz is more comprehensive, but Birthday-in-a-Box's site is easier to navigate.

So feel free to use as few or as many of these suggestions as you want and modify them as you wish.

Many of the Astronomy party ideas can be easily modified to work with a Star Wars theme.

Invitations
Here, the detail is what makes the invitation.

Phrases such as "It Is Your Destiny ... to Come to THIS Party!" or "On (Party Date), in a galaxy far, far away, (Birthday Child's name) was born. Little did he/she know he/she was the Chosen One. Now you have been chosen to come train to become a Jedi. May the Force Be With You."

You can use plain cards or use postcards with pictures of outer space. Invite details are added to the reverse side.

Consider asking guests to come in costume.

Star Wars Party Decor
Have the party at night if possible (what a cool idea for a sleep-over).

Hang black and metallics streamers and balloons all around.

A darkened room with glow-in-the-dark planets and stars hanging from the ceiling (use dark thread) will add to the atmosphere.

Pictures and posters of astronomy or space scenes, planets, rockets and Star Wars movies... maps of the constellations ... these are additional options.

Shindigz has wonderful gossamer with swirl and stars designs to cover walls and life-sized stand-ups of Star Wars characters. (Hint: you can take photographs of the kids with posing with the stand-ups).

Favors, prizes
Goody bags with any combination of Star Wars action figures, candy, stickers, glow sticks ...

Star Wars Party Activities and Games
Rent a Star Wars movie, open up the popcorn, and enjoy!

If it is nighttime, play "light saber flashlight tag". The person who is "It" uses a flashlight to protect the home planet. If the beam of light touches a player they are "out".

Water gun duels are fun activities in your backyard during a hot summer day.

Star Wars board games like Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly - you can get them at Amazon.com.

Refreshments
Why, "spaceship" pizza and "saber" hot dogs.

Resources

These companies provide all-in-one packages that generally include coordinated plates, cups, utensils, invitations, balloons, streamers, etc.

You can usually find related games and other items, too.
