Have an Under-the-Sea party!

Creating an under-the-sea party is easy and fun. And a great way to catch the imagination of the little fish in your family.

These ideas can also work for Finding Nemo, or the Little Mermaid themes.

Use the ideas below as a springboard for your imagination. They are intended as suggestions only.

Most supplies can be made at home or purchased nearby inexpensively.

I've also added links to reputable online suppliers below if you'd rather your keyboard 'do the walking'.

If you don't have the time or inclination to do it all yourself, there are wonderful resources online which will provide you with complete party packages.

Shindigz.com, for example, has a great assortment of themed cups, plates, and other party supplies. They have a huge selection and they have great deals with their "Kit-n-Kaboodles."

These are full sets of themed party supplies, instead of having to buy everything separately. They include themed plates, napkins, invitations, balloons, cutlery, cups, napkins, and a table cover. Getting all of this separately could cost at least twice as much!

So feel free to use as few or as many suggestions as you want. Modify them as you wish.

Under-the-Sea Party Invitations
There are lots of possibilities here.

Take postcards with underwater scenes, scuba divers, or fish. Write the invitation detail on the back.

Cut out a fish from construction paper. Glue to a card and write the invitation detail in the cneter or on the back.

Take blank cards, stamp them with fish stamps around the edges, leaving the center blank. Write in the invitation details there.

Under-the-Sea Party Decor
Take fish shaped templates and cut out different fish shapes out of colored construction paper. Tape them on the wall. Then cover with clear blue or turquoise plastic wrap. Alternatively you may want to use a shower curtain with fish or ocean animals and hang the wall using pushpins.

Hang up fish netting, nautical and scuba or snorkeling items. Push sea shells into some of the holes of the netting.

Take large butcher or kraft paper and cut out large fish and sea creature shapes, creating a front and back to each pattern. Paint the shapes, glue the two sides leaving an opening in the front. Carefully stuff with crinkled newspaper, then glue the hole closed. Hang from the ceiling with fishing line.

Obtain some tapes or CDs of ocean sounds and whale songs to really set the mood.

Under-the-Sea Party Activities and Games
For younger children, anything related to the Little Mermaid or Sponge Bob will work.

Blowing bubbles.

Treasure hunt. If the kids are old enough and a pool is available, they can swim underwater and pick up the 'treasure' on the bottom. Make sure to keep kids well supervised if they will be in a pool or near water.

Cover an area with butcher or kraft paper . Drape drop cloths on the floor. Furnish paint and losts of brushes. Then let the kids paint an undersea mural.

Or provide Water color paints and suitable paper and let kids paint their own creations.

Screen the old classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Food
Why fish, of course. Fish cakes, fish sticks... Clam chwder soup if it's winter.. fish shaped cookies. Fish crackers, etc.
